otterskloof private game reserve

Otterskloof Private Game Reserve is situated near the Free State town of Philippolis in South Africa and was named after the otters found in the ravines on the reserve. The owners, Abel and Karen Erasmus, are well-known conservationists and breeders of rare game species. Abel is a highly respected breeder with a proven track record of more than 20 years. As former owner of Wintershoek Safaris in the Northern Cape, Abel was instrumental in one of the biggest private game relocations when the land was expropriated and sold to the National Parks Board in 2006. The National Parks Board has since established the Mokhala National Park on the purchased land. Most of the game at Wintershoek Safaris were relocated to Otterskloof Private Game Reserve. To accommodate the game and continue with his breeding programmes, Abel acquired land in the Philippolis district and named the newly established reserve Otterskloof Private Game Reserve.

Lesotho highlands water project

Lesotho Highlands Water Project

Senqu/Orange river rises in the mountain region of Lesotho, traversing in a generally western direction nearly 2000km to the Atlantic Ocean and being joined half way by the Vaal river coming in from the north-east. Although the mountain region of Lesotho constitutes only 5% of the the total catchment of the Senqu/Orange river, it provides about 50% of the total catchment run-off. The water originating in the mountains is characterised by good chemical quality and low sediment content. The topography of the region allows for the possibility of developing a hydro-power generation in Lesotho in conjunction with the provision of water supplies to the RSA. The Lesotho Highlands Water Project (LHWP) was identified more than 50 years ago as the least cost effective water resource exploitation to benefit both the peoples of the Kingdom of Lesotho (Lesotho) and  the Republic of South Africa (RSA).
